Baptism is an exciting milestone in a child’s faith journey, but knowing when a young person is truly ready can feel like a big responsibility. As caretakers, you want to make sure your child understands not only what baptism is, but also why it matters. Here’s a simple way to think about readiness and how to walk forward with confidence as you support your child.
What Is Baptism?
Baptism is an outward expression of an inward faith. It’s a public way of saying, “I follow Jesus and I belong to him.”
Baptism does not wash away our sins; it represents our new life in Christ.
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ the new creation has come; the old is gone and the new is here.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
Jesus himself was baptized by being immersed in water as an act of obedience and therefore baptism is an important step of obedience for anyone who has put their trust in him.
5 Signs Your Child Is Ready for Baptism
Instead of looking for a certain age, think about spiritual understanding and desire. These questions can help you discern readiness:
1. Your Child Understands the Gospel
Can they explain, in their own words, that Jesus died for their sins and rose again and that they want to follow him?
2. Your Child Recognizes Their Own Sin
Not in a dramatic way—simply an age-appropriate understanding that they’ve done wrong and need forgiveness.
3. Your Child Wants to Follow Jesus Personally
This is key. Baptism shouldn’t be because a friend is doing it or because a parent suggested it. It should come from genuine faith.
4. Your Child Understands What Baptism Means
They don’t need a theology degree, just the essentials: “I’m showing others I believe in Jesus.”

5. Your Child Shows Fruit of Faith
Simple things like wanting to pray, being interested in Scripture, or trying to obey Jesus can be evidence of the Holy Spirit at work.
If Your Child Is Ready: Next Steps for Kids Baptism
If your child expresses a clear faith in Jesus and a personal desire to be baptized:
- Talk through the Gospel together.
- Let them share their story in their own words.
- Celebrate! This is a joyful spiritual milestone.
- Register for an upcoming Kids Baptism Prep class and learn more about baptism at Mission Hills.
You can also help prepare them by talking together about who they want to share their decision with—grandparents, a favorite teacher, or friends who have encouraged their faith.
What to Do If Your Child Isn’t Ready Yet
Please hear this. “Not yet” is not a failure or lack of faith. Often, it simply means your child needs more time and understanding. Here’s what to do:
- Continue regular conversations about Jesus and the Gospel.
- Encourage questions—curiosity shows interest!
- Pray together and ask God to grow faith in his time.
- Connect with someone from our Kids Staff for additional resources.
Sometimes waiting actually helps build a deeper, more personal decision later.
Preparing Your Child for Baptism: Trust God’s Timing
God cares about your child more than you ever could, and he is faithfully at work in their heart. Baptism is an exciting step but just one moment in a lifelong journey of following Jesus. Walk patiently, listen carefully, and trust the Holy Spirit to lead your child into genuine, lasting faith.
