The holidays bring families together. Sometimes that’s joyful. Sometimes it’s awkward. Often, it’s both at once.
If you have family members who don’t share your faith, holiday gatherings can feel like walking a tightrope. You want to represent Jesus well, but you don’t want to create tension. You want to share what matters most to you, but you don’t want to force anything.
Here’s the good news: sharing your faith doesn’t require a formal presentation. It doesn’t need talking points or a perfect argument. God often uses everyday moments to open doors for gospel conversations. Sometimes the most powerful testimony is simply how you show up.
Start with Prayer, Not Pressure
Before Mary carried Jesus into the world, she carried a posture of surrender. In Luke 1:38, she says, “I am the Lord’s servant… may your word to me be fulfilled.”
Sharing your faith begins the same way. By surrendering the outcome to God.
Pray for open hearts in your family. Pray for gentle opportunities to arise naturally. Pray for courage to speak with grace when the moment comes.
Here’s the truth: God is responsible for their transformation. You’re responsible for faithfulness. That takes so much pressure off.
Lead with Love, Not Debate
Have you noticed how Jesus connected with people before he corrected them? He listened before he taught. He led with compassion, not condemnation.
Your presence and kindness during the holidays often speak louder than any theological point you could make.
“Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.” Philippians 4:5
Your calm spirit when things get tense. Your patience when conversations get difficult. Your kindness when someone says something that bothers you. That might be the most powerful testimony your family sees all year.
Look for Natural Open Doors
You don’t have to manufacture faith conversations. Just pay attention to what God’s already doing.
- Someone shares a struggle? Ask if you can pray for them.
- Someone expresses uncertainty about the future? Share how God has led you through uncertain times.
- Someone asks about your church or why you seem different? Tell them a story.
The holidays are full of these natural moments. When you’re not anxiously waiting to force a conversation, you’ll be amazed at how many doors God opens.
Share Your Story, Not a Script
People might argue with theology, but it’s hard to argue with a personal story. When you share how Jesus has changed your life, it becomes relational instead of confrontational.
1 Peter 3:15 reminds us to “always be prepared to give an answer… but do this with gentleness and respect.”
Your story is one of your most powerful tools. Not because it’s dramatic or perfect, but because it’s yours. It’s real. You lived it.
What has Jesus done in your life? How has following him changed you? Where have you seen God show up? These stories matter more than you think.
Trust the Results to God
Sometimes conversations go beautifully. Sometimes they’re awkward. Sometimes they don’t happen at all.
But God is always working in ways you can’t see.
Your job is to plant seeds. His job is to grow them. You don’t have to make anyone believe. You don’t have to defend every doctrine. You don’t even have to “win” the conversation.
Just be faithful with the moments he gives you. Trust him with everything else.
A Prayer for Courage and Compassion
Jesus, give me courage to share my faith with gentleness. Help me love my family the way you love them. Open the right doors and give me the right words. Use my life, my peace, my joy, my story to point others to you this holiday season. Amen.
This Christmas, may your presence carry the hope of Christ into every conversation. And may God use even the smallest moments for his glory!
