INSTANT TAKEAWAYS

1 | GET YOUR MEANING FROM THE TEXT

An expositional sermon is when the content structure and emphasis of the sermon are drawn from and accurately represent the text. There’s what in it as content, and there’s also a structure in each text that the author has put in. If you put those two together, you’re going to get the emphasis. An application of this could be seen in Ephesians 2: 1 – 10. Paul’s emphasis can be seen here in verse 10, we are His workmanship! What He has done for us, has made us His “show-off-piece!”. Structure + Content = Emphasis.
– Listen starting at 9:26 –

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. | Ephesians 2: 1 – 10

2 | PREACH THE BIBLE THE WAY IT WAS WRITTEN

If you’re going through Ephesians, read the whole thing. That book is a letter and is meant to be read in its entirety. It’s easy for a theme to get lost the further you break it down. Really push in and listen to the text; what comes before it and what comes after it. Read it and look for sign-post words, think about basic Bible Study Methods! Listen to the Word of God as The Word of God. At the end of the day, you want people to feel as if they can understand the Bible on their own. The more we put an emphasis on the preacher being essential for discerning what the Bible means, the more we’re inhibiting our congregations.

3 | YOUR PREACHING SHOULD IMPACT YOUR LIFE FIRST

It’s so easy for us to just put something together and preach it, without being impacted by it. The more we look around us, and our brothers and sisters are falling to questionable behavior, we ask, “how can someone, who spends so much time in the Word, fall victim to something like this?” It goes from their text, into their mind, into their arm, into their computer and never impacts their heart. Don’t preach for notoriaty, don’t preach for fame, don’t preach for a big church to be “seen”, preach because your heart gets the best benefit of your study.
