SEASON 4 COMING THIS FALL 2021!

As we all know, life can get crazy busy with well…life. Everyone has seasons that don’t allow for heavy time commitments to a weekly Bible study at their church or in their neighborhood. That’s why we’ve created a podcast space where you can come and go, as your schedule allows, that points you toward Jesus and His Word.

Each season, (a combination of our hosts) Kelly Brown, Kristy Allen, Micah Harrison, and Matt Winter will discuss a Bible study and share with you what they have learned and how God is moving in their lives as they go through the study.

We want to give you multiple ways to engage with the material; in addition to listening to the podcast, you are welcome to purchase the study book and follow along with us on your own time. We’ve also created a Facebook Group as an online community for listeners of our podcast. We want to get to know you; we’d love to know who you are, what God is teaching you & any questions you have.

The Underdogs: A Study through Jude, Philemon, Obadiah, 2nd + 3rd John

New Study coming October 2021

3 John Pt.2

3 John Pt.2

In this episode, we discuss the ending of 3rd John and reflect on this past season of the Mission Hills Bible Study Podcast. We’ve spent 2 episodes on each of the 5 shortest books of the Bible. Our prayer is that you’ve seen that Scripture is so deep and rich that you could spend your whole life studying it, living it out, and never get to the bottom of it. We hope you’ve enjoyed this deep dive into Scripture and that you’ve learned a few new ways to study it yourself. Now…go become more like Jesus and join him on mission!

3 John Pt.1

3 John Pt.1

Third John holds a unique place in the bible for a few reasons. First, it’s the shortest book of the Bible. Second, it’s a unique book in the New Testament because it is a personal letter that reflects ancient letters more than other books in the New Testament. John continues to focus on the intersection of truth and love, but now in the form of hospitality and ministry support. How do we apply John’s words today? Should we never accept help from an unbeliever, or does that application change today in a different time and culture? Our How to Read the Bible segment today is “Why Every Word in Scripture is Important.”

2 John Pt.2

2 John Pt.2

Last time, we went verse by verse through 2 John. So this time we are swinging the pendulum the other way and flying by the seat of our pants. We focus on what stood out to us from John’s letter and how to apply it to our lives. We get kind of emotional talking about God’s love for people and seeing them in the light of being worthy of love because they are made in God’s image. But that doesn’t mean we just way yes to everything. I can love someone and tell them “no” because that is what is best for them. John highlights the healthy tension between love and truth. Lastly, Kristy and Kelly join us for a conversation about reading the Bible with both your head and your heart; both logic and emotion.

2 John Pt.1

2 John Pt.1

We throw a curveball, but hopefully a helpful one. We are going verse by verse and show you how to make observations and ask questions about a text. We spend a lot less time than usual drawing conclusions and explaining the text because we want to show you how we do this. It’s a pretty unpolished episode. Grab a bible, read through 2 John yourself, and then join us as we learn from this New Testament letter.

Philemon Part 2

Philemon Part 2

What a great discussion. Join us as we continue to wrestle with ideas, topics, and thoughts brought up in Philemon. We talk about slavery, fellowship, and intimacy within the church, Paul’s heart for the gospel, and much more. What does it take to apply Scripture to our own lives today? We talk about all these things in today’s episode.

Philemon Part 1

Philemon Part 1

Take some time to read Philemon and then join us for our round one studying this book. We grapple with cultural differences, the idea of unity and perfect wording in the midst of hard and messy situations, and give a thorough background all while we are just a little tired. Paul pushes us to look at what the next steps of unity, love, and community look like in our own lives. Also, listen in to learn how interlinear bibles, Google, and some other resources will bring your word studies to life!

Obadiah Part 2

Obadiah Part 2

Wow! This episode is jam-packed with fun themes, application, and interpretation! We explain the “Day of the Lord,” the importance of literary genre in interpreting the Bible, how Hebrew verbs work, pride as the source of disobedience. A few other things that get time in this episode: The Tower of Babel, the principle of “an eye for an eye,” and the Singapore Airport, mountains, and possessions.

We give an example of how to evaluate two differing interpretations of a passage of Scripture. There are so many little nuggets about interpretation in this episode: Hebrew verbs, evaluating different interpretations, literary genres, key themes, keywords, and prescriptive vs descriptive application. If you are looking for practical insights about reading and understanding the Bible, this is for you!

Jude Part 2

Jude Part 2

We’re diving into the book of Jude! In this episode, we focus on the way Jude uses a lot of Old Testament and other literature in his letter. What is he doing? Why is he using so many other sources? Jude even quotes from a book called 1st Enoch, which is not in the Old Testament. What do we do with that? Jude is writing against false teachers, warning the church to watch out for people distorting the truth to justify their own disobedience. See the end of the episode for our segment “How to Study the Bible.”

Week 10 | Hebrews 12 & 13

Week 10 | Hebrews 12 & 13

We are in the final chapters of Hebrews where the author is calling these Hebrew Christians to faith and endurance by building on the great cloud of witnesses from Hebrews 11 and reminding them of their God who was faithful to them. In chapter 12, we see the push towards endurance in daily living until the Lord ushers in his completed kingdom someday. In chapter 13, we wrap up with concluding exhortations and remarks for this audience and we hone in on how they apply to us today.

Week 9 | Hebrews 11

In Chapter 11, we look at the famous “Hall of Faith” in all of its gritty glory. We see models of faithful yet imperfect men and women taking their next right steps of faith often in trying circumstances; all without seeing the end result and only being able to  trust the promise given to them.

Week 6 | Hebrews 7:1-8:13

Week 6 | Hebrews 7:1-8:13

In Week 6 we look at how the Old Testament figure of Melchizedek foreshadows Christ’s fulfillment as our King of Righteousness and Peace. We see that both Melchizedek and Christ are from a different priestly order than the Levitical order and that they are both Kings. With this new order, the author of Hebrews makes the argument that a new covenant was then needed through the fulfillment of Christ which nullifies the old law. Christ as our priest-king reigns forever in the better tent (heaven) and offers us a better covenant of hope based on better promises. So, therefore, it’s a continuation of the author’s argument to the original audience to stand firm because they have the better thing.

Week 5 | Hebrews 6

Week 5 | Hebrews 6

In Week 5, we pick up in the middle of the warning to grow in maturity. The author urges the Hebrews to be carried forward by God to maturity, to bear fruit, and to live out their better salvation because it is Jesus who guarantees the new better oath and covenant rendering the old one obsolete. He ends the passage by reminding them that the way through trouble is not by backtracking but through anchoring more fully in the promise of salvation through Christ.

Week 4 | Hebrews 4:14 – 5

In this episode, we consider Jesus as better than Moses. Moses was Israel’s deliverer, but he still struggled with disbelief and disobedience in his humanity, to the point that he wasn’t able to enter into the rest of the promised land. But Christ is our better deliverer with his perfect sacrifice and his better rest. We can enter that rest with our obedience to Christ through our belief and our submission to scripture which reveals our sin and weakness so that we can draw near to the throne of grace to receive help for those areas.

In this episode we see that Jesus has been appointed by God and that makes him superior to the angels. We are warned that we should not drift from the gospel even when times get rough.
