Imagine stepping off the plane in a new place, excited to serve but unsure what to expect. Mission trips are a great way to grow your faith and help others. But to truly reflect Christ, it’s important to avoid some common mistakes. Here are 10 things to never do on a short-term mission trip and how to represent Jesus’ love in everything you do.

1. Don’t Be Loud + Obnoxious

Why it matters: Respect helps build trust and share God’s love.

How-to: It’s exciting to visit a new place, but remember this is everyday life for the people you’re serving. Stay aware of your surroundings and express excitement in a way that’s not disruptive. Follow the behavior of locals as a guide

2. Don’t Forget to Use Local Currency

Why it matters: Using the local currency shows respect and appreciation for the culture.

How-to: Learn the exchange rate before you go and keep any calculations in your head. Always use local money when paying for things to show that you value their system.

3. Be Mindful of Your Facial Expressions

Why it matters: Your expressions can unintentionally offend people.

How-to: Learn about the local culture and prepare for differences in food, smells, and customs. Stay calm and curious when something surprises you instead of showing shock.

4. Don’t Compare Everything to Home

Why it matters: Appreciating differences builds stronger connections.

How-to: Instead of calling things “weird” or “strange,” ask questions and learn. For example, you could say, “That’s interesting! Can you tell me more about it?” This approach shows respect and curiosity.

5. Don’t Expect Everyone to Speak Your Language

Why it matters: Being patient and learning some phrases shows humility.

How-to: Learn a few key words or phrases before your trip and try them out, even if you make mistakes. Be kind and patient when communication is difficult.

6. Leave Attention-Grabbing Clothes at Home

Why it matters: Dressing modestly shows respect for the culture and keeps the focus on your mission.

How-to: Find out what’s appropriate to wear in the country you’re visiting. Pack simple, modest clothing that won’t distract or offend.

7. Don’t Make It All About Social Media

Why it matters: Mission trips are about serving others, not gaining followers.

How-to: Take photos only with permission, especially if children are involved. Build real relationships, and focus on honoring the dignity of the people you meet.

8. Don’t Skip Pre-Trip Preparation

Why it matters: Being prepared helps you serve better.

How-to: Pray for the trip, learn about the culture, and get to know your team members before you go. These steps will help you make a bigger impact.

9. Don’t Isolate Yourself

Why it matters: Working as a team shows God’s love and multiplies your efforts.

How-to: Spend time with your team in prayer and conversation. Resolve conflicts quickly and focus on serving Christ together.

10. Follow Your Host’s Lead

Why it matters: Your hosts know their community best.

How-to: Listen to your hosts and follow their instructions. Trust their knowledge and leadership to guide your efforts.

Before your next mission trip, pray for humility and a heart ready to serve. Learn about the people you’ll be visiting so you can reflect Jesus Christ’s love in all you do. Small changes in your actions can make a big difference.
