Living on Mission in Unexpected Places

Not long ago, someone asked me a simple but powerful question: If this were my last year on earth, how would I live differently?

Questions like that have a way of bringing life into sharp focus. I realized I would want to be far more intentional with every moment I was given. I imagine you might feel the same.

Instead of letting days drift by, we would try to make our time, our words, and our actions count for something meaningful. Scripture reminds us that life is both precious and brief, calling us to live wisely: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12).

That question is really asking: what is the purpose of life, and am I actually living it?

Living on purpose begins when we recognize that each day is a gift and an opportunity to reflect God’s love.

A truly meaningful life is directed by God’s priorities rather than the noise around us.

Be Intentional With Your Time

Time is the one resource we can’t recover

Every day we are given 1,440 minutes. 1,440 opportunities to make choices that reflect God’s priorities. Every minute spent scrolling, comparing, or drifting is a minute that could have been invested in something that lasts.

What we fill ourselves with is what will eventually pour out. When life bumps us through stress, temptation, or conflict, what spills out reflects what has been inside us.

Jesus Christ modeled this during His temptation in the wilderness, responding to each attack with Scripture: “It is written…” (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10). When we spend time in God’s Word, we prepare our hearts and minds so that in every situation we are equipped to respond with truth and wisdom.

What are you filling yourself with? If you want to make each day count for the kingdom, start with what you consume. God’s Word, life-giving community, and meaningful relationships are what prepare us to show up well for ourselves and for others.

Be Intentional With Your Words

Words are never neutral

They can build up, encourage, and inspire, or wound, discourage, and destroy. The words we speak to others matter deeply. But we should also remember that the words we speak to ourselves shape our emotional and mental health and the way we behave.

Because of this, we must choose our words wisely and intentionally. Jesus taught that our speech reveals the condition of our hearts: “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34).

How do your words reflect God? When our hearts are filled with God’s truth, love, and grace, our words can bring life, encouragement, and hope—not only to others but to ourselves as well. Every word becomes an opportunity to reflect His kingdom.

Be Intentional With Your Actions

It’s hard to love people well when we’re in a hurry, distracted, or focused on our own priorities

Living intentionally with our actions means making deliberate choices to love others in practical ways, even when it is difficult.

Purposeful living slows us down enough to actually see the people in front of us and to respond with compassion rather than react out of habit.

Jesus calls us to act with compassion, patience, and humility in our everyday life.

One of the best ways to do this is by spending time in prayer, talking with God about the people, circumstances, and choices we face, and listening well.

Interestingly, the word listen contains the same letters as silent, reminding us that hearing God’s voice requires both attentiveness and stillness. When we pause to seek His guidance, our actions are shaped by His will rather than our own impulses.

What aspects of your life today best reflect God’s influence on you? Where could you practice more dependence on God?

Making today count doesn’t require grand gestures

It requires consistent, intentional choices. When we intentionally steward our time, speak life-giving words, and act with love and patience, we gain a sense of purpose as our lives begin to reflect God’s kingdom in tangible ways.

Each day becomes an opportunity to glorify God and bless others. As Jesus said, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). When our time, words, and actions are aligned with His true purposes, ordinary moments become extraordinary opportunities to demonstrate His love and grace.

Living on purpose transforms not only our own lives but the lives of those around us, pointing them toward the goodness of God.

What’s one area, time, words, or actions, where you want to be more intentional this week? Start there. Take one small step toward living today with purpose, and watch how God uses it.
