A new year has a way of making us want to start fresh. Healthier habits, clearer priorities, a better spiritual rhythm. And for a lot of Christians, “read the Bible more” sits right at the top of that list.

But here’s the thing: the Bible can feel overwhelming when you’re not sure where to begin. It’s big. It’s ancient. And if you’ve ever flipped it open randomly, you know it’s not always obvious what you’re reading or why it matters.

The good news? God isn’t asking you to read it perfectly. He just invites you to show up, listen, and let his Word shape your life one step at a time.

Why We Get Stuck Before We Even Start

Let’s be honest. Starting a Bible-reading habit feels intimidating:

  • Which book do I start with?
  • What if I don’t understand what I’m reading?
  • How do I stay consistent when life gets busy?

You’re not alone in asking those questions. Scripture may be ancient, but the God behind it is alive and active. He meets you right where you are.

Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”

Notice what it doesn’t say. It doesn’t illuminate the entire road ahead. It just shows you the next step. And honestly, that’s all you need to begin.

Start With Jesus

If you’ve never read the Bible regularly, one of the best places to start is with Jesus himself. The Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) give you a clear picture of who he is and what he came to do.

Try starting with one of these:

  • Mark is fast-paced and concise. Great if you want to jump right in.
  • John is rich with meaning and focuses on Jesus’ identity. Perfect if you want to go deeper.
  • Luke emphasizes God’s compassion and heart for outsiders. Beautiful if you’ve ever felt like you don’t belong.

Reading about Jesus first helps the rest of Scripture make sense. Everything points to him anyway.

Use a Simple Framework: Read, Reflect, Respond

You don’t need a seminary degree to study the Bible. You just need a simple rhythm you can repeat. Here’s one that works:

1. READ

Pick a short passage. Maybe 5 to 10 verses. Go slowly. Don’t rush through it.

2. REFLECT

Ask yourself a few questions:

  • What does this teach me about God?
  • What stands out to me? What confuses me?
  • What does this show me about people or life?

3. RESPOND

Turn what you’ve read into a prayer:

  • “God, help me live this truth today.”
  • “Lord, I don’t understand this yet. Give me clarity as I keep reading.”
  • “Jesus, thank you for what you’ve shown me here.”

This keeps Bible reading from becoming just information. It becomes a conversation with God.

Pick a Plan That Fits Your Life Right Now

There’s no one-size-fits-all way to read Scripture. Choose something that matches your current pace of life:

  • 5-Minute Daily Plan | Great for busy parents or anyone restarting the habit
  • One Chapter a Day | Walks you steadily through books of the Bible
  • Bible-in-a-Year Plan | Good if you want the full story from start to finish
  • Topical Plan (anxiety, joy, hope, identity) | Helpful when you need Scripture to speak to a specific need

The best plan is the one you’ll actually stick with. Don’t overcomplicate it.

Don’t Read Alone

God designed us to grow in community. When you read Scripture with others (your spouse, a friend, your small group), it deepens what you’re learning and helps you stay consistent.

Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly… teaching and admonishing one another.”

If you hit a confusing passage (and you will), ask someone who’s further along in their faith. Curious questions aren’t signs of weakness. They’re signs you’re growing.

Give Yourself Grace

Some days you’ll feel inspired. Some days you’ll zone out halfway through. Some days you’ll forget to read at all.

That’s okay. God isn’t disappointed. He’s delighted that you’re pursuing him.

Start small. Stay consistent. Let God meet you wherever you are.

A Prayer to Begin

Lord, as I begin this year, help your Word shape my heart, my thoughts, my decisions. Give me understanding as I read and a desire to know you more. Lead me step by step, and help me build a rhythm with you that lasts. Amen.

This year, you don’t have to read the Bible perfectly. You just have to start. And as you do, God will use his Word to guide you, strengthen you, and transform you in ways you never expected.
