Walking with Jesus starts with his Word. But if you’ve ever stood in front of the Bible shelf at a bookstore (or scrolled Amazon late at night) you know the choices can feel overwhelming.

Which Bible will help my preschooler? What will actually connect with my middle schooler? Is there one that works for high school students without feeling too academic?

At Mission Hills, we believe the Bible is the primary way God speaks to us today. And we want every child and student to have a Bible they can understand, enjoy, and grow with. That’s why we pulled together a simple guide to help you choose the best Bible for kids and students at every age and stage.

Preschool (ages 3–5)

At this stage, kids learn through story, song, and play. They need simple language and lots of pictures to help them connect.

  • Bible App for Kids (YouVersion) | A free app filled with animated Bible stories and interactive games. It’s an engaging way to introduce God’s Word wherever you are.
  • The Beginner’s Bible | Colorful art and 90+ stories make this a perfect first Bible to read aloud.
  • The Jesus Storybook Bible | Every story whispers Jesus’ name, pointing little ones to the big picture of God’s rescue plan.
  • My First Hands-On Bible | A great transitional Bible for ages 4–6. It moves beyond limited story collections toward more comprehensive coverage of Scripture, with fun hands-on activities that keep kids engaged.

Early Elementary (ages 6–8)

Once kids start reading on their own, it’s time to give them Bibles with full text and fun features that keep them engaged.

  • NIV Adventure Bible | The #1 recommended kids’ Bible. Book introductions, maps, and “Live It!” sections help bring God’s Word to life.
  • NIV Kids’ Visual Study Bible | Packed with charts, images, and infographics—great for visual learners who love exploring.
  • The Action Bible | A comic-style retelling that grabs attention with bold illustrations. It’s not a full translation, but it’s a fantastic companion to spark interest.

Upper Elementary / Preteen (ages 9–11)

Preteens ask big questions and love to dig deeper. Bibles for this stage should help them investigate and personalize their faith.

Middle School (ages 12–14)

These years can feel complicated, but God’s Word brings clarity and confidence. Look for Bibles that answer questions and point to practical application.

High School (ages 15–18)

By high school, students need depth. These Bibles encourage serious study while still being readable and relevant.

What matters most is that your child or student is opening God’s Word and meeting Jesus there. Start with one that fits their age and personality. Read it together. Ask questions. Let them highlight and underline.

Our Mission Hills Kids, Middle School, and High School Ministries would love to help you find the right Bible and encourage your child’s next step with Jesus.

Family life SHOULDN’T feel like survival mode

Some days it’s hot coffee and on-time carpools. Other days it’s cold coffee in the microwave and hiding in the pantry with fruit snacks.
