For my friend Sue, it happened suddenly. In just three weeks last fall, her husband lost his job, she was diagnosed with an unexpected illness, and their oldest son was kicked out of college for behavioral problems. Her world turned upside down, and the foundation she’d built her life on felt like it was crumbling.

For me, it was a slow drift. Juggling my kids’ school and sports schedules, my full-time job as a nurse, and my never-ending to-do list left me with little free time each day. Then days became weeks, and weeks became months. Somewhere along the way, without even realizing it, I lost track of the most important relationship in my life.

For both of us, the result was the same. We felt profoundly disconnected from God.

WHERE IS GOD?

The truth is, feeling far from God is one of the most common struggles believers face, yet it’s something we rarely talk about openly.

It’s an unsettling feeling. You want to pray, but you just can’t summon the motivation. You know God is there, but you no longer sense his presence.

YOU’RE NOT ALONE

Many of us have had moments in our lives where we have felt God’s undeniable presence. That peace that passes all understanding. A joy we can’t explain.

Then comes a season where God feels more distant. We wonder where he is and why we can’t feel him. If that’s where you find yourself right now, don’t be discouraged.

IT’S HUMAN NATURE

When God seems distant, it doesn’t reflect your worth or your faith. Even the most faithful people in Scripture wrestled with feelings of spiritual disconnection. The psalmist cried out, “But I cry to you for help, Lord; in the morning, my prayer comes before you. Why, Lord, do you reject me and hide your face from me?” (Psalm 88:13-14)

David, called a man after God’s own heart, had moments when he couldn’t feel God’s presence. Paul endured suffering and longed for relief from God when his prayers went unanswered. Even Jesus, on the cross, cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46)

If these biblical heroes experienced times of feeling disconnected from God, it’s completely normal that we would too. Part of our humanness means that we will naturally experience different seasons in our lives and our journeys of faith.

Going from a season of closeness to God to one that feels more distant doesn’t mean you’ve done something wrong or that you are a bad Christian. It means you are a normal one.

REST IN THE TRUTH

When you are feeling far from God, the first step toward reconnection is anchoring yourself in truth rather than emotions. Your feelings, while valid, are not the ultimate reality of your spiritual life.

The Bible promises us that God will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). His presence in a believer’s life isn’t dependent on our emotional state or spiritual performance. It’s guaranteed by his character and promises.

Whether you feel God’s presence or not, he is there. This isn’t spiritual wishful thinking; it’s biblical truth.

HE IS NEARER THAN YOU THINK

Think of it like the sun on a cloudy day. Just because the clouds block your view doesn’t mean the sun has disappeared. It’s still shining, still providing light and warmth, even when you can’t see it or feel it.

God’s presence works the same way. Circumstances, emotions and life’s distractions and storms can create “clouds” that obscure our sense of his nearness. But he is still near.

During these times, lean into Scripture that reminds you of God’s faithfulness:

“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)

“Come near to God and he will come near to you.” (James 4:8)

“Neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:39)

SEEK HIM

Reconnecting to God requires the same intentionality as rebuilding any important relationship. If you found yourself feeling distant from your spouse or best friend, what would you do? You’d reach out, spend time together and invest in your connection to them.

Our relationship with God works the same way. The Bible calls us to continually seek God with our whole hearts. That means setting aside intentional time to be with him. Even when – maybe especially when – we don’t feel like it.

Here are some practical ways to seek God:

LIGHT THE SPARK

  • Listen to worship music that opens your heart.
  • Read Scripture, even when it feels dry at first.
  • Find a devotional that speaks to your current season in life.
  • Memorize a few new Bible verses that remind you of God’s faithfulness.
  • Listen to spiritually focused podcasts during your commute.
  • Pray in whatever way you can and as often as you can. “God, help me feel you again” is a great start.

You don’t need to feel anything profound during these activities. Commit to the effort and let the results come in God’s timing. The tiniest spark can ignite a full flame, and simple, consistent spiritual practices like these can reignite your connection with God.

REFLECT + CONNECT

Sometimes our spiritual distance has roots we need to examine. While we can do everything “right” spiritually and still experience seasons when God feels absent, it’s worth asking honest questions about potential barriers.

Are there areas of sin you’ve been avoiding acknowledging? Unforgiveness you’re harboring? Priorities that have slowly shifted you away from God? The distractions of this world can gradually lead us to neglect our relationship with him without even realizing it.

Be vulnerable in your prayer time. If there’s something contributing to the distance you feel, confession and repentance can be the bridge back to closeness with God.

LIVE LIKE JESUS

Here’s a beautiful truth. When your spiritual tank feels empty, sometimes the best way to fill it up is by meeting the needs of others. Jesus consistently demonstrated that loving God and loving people are inseparably connected.

  • Invite someone who may be feeling lonely for coffee or a walk.
  • Make a meal for the harried new mom down the street.
  • Share words of encouragement with a coworker who feels down.
  • Write a note of appreciation to someone who’s made a difference in your life.

When we bring a little more of heaven to earth through acts of love and service, we can experience God in a fresh new way. There’s power in looking beyond our own struggles to meet others’ needs. It shifts our perspective and opens our hearts to God’s presence.

REACH OUT TO OTHERS

Don’t walk this journey alone. Talk to a pastor, trusted friend, or your small group about how you feel. Their empathy, encouragement, and wisdom might be just what you need. Sometimes God uses other people to remind us of his presence and love.

PRACTICE GRATITUDE

Don’t forget to reflect on what God has already done in your life. Remembering his past faithfulness and practicing gratitude can bridge the gap you currently feel. Start a gratitude journal or simply spend time each day acknowledging God’s goodness.

WAIT WITH PATIENCE

Finally, remember that feeling far from God doesn’t confirm his absence. Sometimes reconnecting with him is about simply waiting with faith and patience.

Continue to pursue God even when you don’t feel him. James 4:8 promises that when we draw near to God, he draws near to us. That doesn’t always happen immediately or in ways we expect, but it’s a guarantee we can count on.

Don’t give up just because things aren’t happening on your timeline. God may be working in ways you don’t yet recognize, and your spiritual breakthrough could be closer than you think. Stay open to his voice – in Scripture, through other people, in nature, or in quiet moments of your day.
