When life feels like a fight

Let’s be honest—life can feel like a fight. Between everyday stress and the deeper stuff that weighs us down, it’s easy to feel like we’re barely holding on. But what if there’s more going on than we can see? Scripture tells us we’re in a spiritual battle. And God doesn’t leave us defenseless. He gives us everything we need to stand firm.

“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world…” (2 Corinthians 10:3-4)

The Apostle Paul used battle language for a reason. We’re not just fighting circumstances. We’re fighting for faith, truth, and peace in a world that pushes back.

The invisible battle we’re all in

Spiritual warfare is the invisible struggle between good and evil. As followers of Jesus, we face real opposition—temptation, lies, fear, and discouragement—that try to pull us away from him (Ephesians 6:12). But here’s the good news: God gives us spiritual armor so we can stand strong and not give up.

1. Live with sincerity + integrity

Paul says to buckle up with truth and suit up with righteousness (Ephesians 6:14). These two go hand in hand. Truth means being real. Living with sincerity. Righteousness means living with integrity. Letting our actions line up with our faith.

“Be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” (1 Peter 1:15-16)

Living a life that reflects Jesus protects your heart from the lies that come your way.

2. Stay grounded in the good news

Roman soldiers wore sturdy shoes so they could stay grounded in battle. Paul says the gospel does that for us (Ephesians 6:15). When you know you’re forgiven and deeply loved by God, you walk with confidence and peace. Even when life feels chaotic.

3. Trust God even when it’s hard

Faith is trusting God when things don’t make sense. It’s choosing to believe his promises, even when your feelings or circumstances tell you otherwise. That kind of faith acts like a shield. It blocks the lies, doubts, and distractions that the enemy throws at us (Ephesians 6:16).

“If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all.” (Isaiah 7:9)

4. Guard your thoughts with God’s truth

Your thoughts matter. That’s why Paul tells us to put on the helmet of salvation (Ephesians 6:17). It reminds us that our identity is secure in Jesus. We don’t earn it, we just receive it. Knowing who you are in Christ helps guard your mind from fear, shame, and confusion.

5. Use Scripture as your weapon

This one’s our only offensive weapon. And it’s powerful. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, he didn’t argue or explain, he quoted Scripture. And the enemy left him alone.

“Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.” (John 17:17)

Want to grow stronger in battle? Start reading the Bible. Memorize verses. Study in community. Let God’s Word reshape how you think and respond.

6. Stay connected to your source of strength

Paul wraps up the armor list with prayer (Ephesians 6:18). Prayer isn’t just a backup plan, it’s how we stay connected to God and stay alert. Spirit-led prayer means we’re open to God’s direction, praying with purpose, and covering others in prayer too.

Try keeping a prayer journal to see how God shows up over time. It’s encouraging and a great way to stay focused.

Take a step toward strength today

You don’t have to feel helpless or alone in the fight. God’s given you real tools to walk in strength. Maybe today’s a good time to ask: Which piece of armor am I already using? Which one do I need to grow in?
