I remember meeting a man who was homeless about a year and a half ago. What started as a simple interaction grew into something more as my friends and I began spending time with him. He didn’t really have a relationship with God or a clear understanding of who he is. It would have been easy to jump in with all the “right” answers, but instead, we slowed down.
We listened, asked questions, and simply spent time with him. Our approach to evangelism wasn’t a project; it was getting to know a person.
Over time, that consistent relationship made an impact. His understanding of God began to grow, and eventually he started thanking God for all the big and little blessings in his life. It didn’t happen during one perfect conversation, but through faithful presence over time.
Looking back, I realized something important: effective evangelism isn’t about winning arguments. It’s about walking with people.
If we want to share our faith in Jesus in a meaningful and lasting way, we need to rethink our approach to sharing the good news.
Here are three keys to effective personal evangelism that reflect a more relational, intentional, and Spirit-led way of engaging others.
1. Pursue Relationship
Evangelism begins with people, not presentations. Too often, we can treat sharing our faith like a box to check rather than a relationship to cultivate. But real impact happens when we genuinely care about others, not as “projects,” but as people made in God’s image.
Think of yourself as a travel guide on a spiritual journey. A guide doesn’t force travelers down a path. They walk alongside them, pointing out landmarks, answering questions, and helping them navigate unfamiliar terrain. In the same way, we are called to journey with others spiritually, building trust and offering guidance along the way.
This means pursuing spiritual friendships, relationships where faith isn’t hidden, but naturally woven into conversations and shared experiences (1 Thessalonians 2:8).
2. Ask Questions and Listen
One of the most underrated tools in relational evangelism is curiosity. Instead of feeling pressure to have all the answers, we can create space by asking thoughtful questions and truly listening.
Jesus often engaged people this way. He asked questions that revealed the heart, invited reflection, and opened the door for deeper truth (Matthew 16:15). Listening shows respect. It communicates that we value someone’s story, not just their agreement with us.
When we listen well, we also gain insight into where someone is spiritually, including their doubts, experiences, and longings (Proverbs 20:5). This allows us to respond with compassion and relevance rather than making assumptions.
Good questions might include:
- “What has shaped your beliefs about God?”
- “Have you ever had a spiritual experience?”
- “What do you think gives life meaning?”
3. Pray
At the heart of effective evangelism is dependence on God. We can build relationships and ask great questions, but ultimately, transformation is a work of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:6).
Prayer aligns our hearts with God’s. It reminds us that we are not responsible for changing someone. We are simply called to be faithful to love, share, and trust God with the results.
Pray for:
- Opportunities to have meaningful conversations
- Boldness and wisdom in what to say
- Open hearts in those you’re engaging
- Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s leading
And don’t underestimate the power of praying with someone when the moment is right.
A Life of faithful presence means evangelism doesn’t have to be intimidating
Sharing the gospel is not about having perfect words or perfectly timed conversations. It’s about faithful presence, continually showing up in people’s lives with love, humility, and intentionality.
This week, consider one person in your life who needs the good news of Jesus. Pursue them relationally. Ask them a meaningful question to open the door to spiritual conversations. And commit to praying for them daily.
You don’t have to force anything; just walk with them.
Because sometimes the most powerful way to point someone to God’s love is simply to journey alongside them. You might see the impact right away, or you might just plant the seeds for God to water. But your faithfulness can impact someone’s eternal life!
